American Anti-Israelism: The Worst Part of Obama’s Legacy

Now that Obama is nearing the end of his second Presidential term, his fundamental transformation of America has been nothing short of sweeping and staggering in its proportions, effectiveness, and comprehensiveness. There are aspects of our nation and culture that will never again be the same due to his negative influence. Many examples could be cited such as our nation’s demilitarization, Obamacare, Common Core in education, the leftist turn of our judiciary, our economic stagnation, the internet giveaway to the globalists, the omission of the expression “radical Islam” in our war on terror, Benghazi, the Arab Spring, our porous borders, executive amnesty, the failure to prosecute lawbreaker-in-chief Hillary Rodham Clinton, the plethora of unconstitutional executive orders, the near doubling of our national debt, the persecution of Christian owned and operated organizations that fail to endorse the same-sex agenda, and the alienation of our allies and emboldening of our enemies worldwide.

However, as horrific as all of these fundamental changes are, they pale in significance in comparison to the most diabolical trend of all that has been accelerated by Obama: our national turning against the nation of Israel. Of all of the aforementioned negative government policies, this trend concerning Israel will derail our country perhaps faster than any of the other trends. This is the trend that often causes me to question whether we will survive as an independent and free nation and culture. It’s one thing when office holders privately harbor animus towards the modern Jewish state. It is something entirely different when such hostility enters into formal government pronouncements. How long can God look the other way given His universal promise to bless those who bless the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and curse those who curse them (Gen. 12:3)? While most have probably paid little, if any, attention to them, there are three such official governmental pronouncements that have transpired very recently. Allow me to draw each of these to your attention.

Obama’s Recent United Nations Address

The first official governmental announcement relates to the September 20, 2016 Address by President Obama to the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations in New York. Concerning the modern state of Israel, Obama stated: “And surely, Israelis and Palestinians will be better off if Palestinians reject incitement and recognize the legitimacy of Israel, but Israel must recognize that it cannot permanently occupy and settle Palestinian land” (italics added).1 According to this line of thought, Israel is not dwelling in their own land but rather is illegally occupying land that belongs to another people-group or nation. Such a statement directly contradicts divine revelation. Genesis 15:18-21 specifically states: “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.’” Lest there remain any ambiguity concerning who the land of Israel ultimately belongs to, Leviticus 25:23 proclaims, “The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are but aliens and sojourners with Me” (italics added). Thus, the land belongs to the Lord, and He has unconditionally bequeathed it by way of a covenant to the Hebrew people. From a biblical perspective Israel is not currently illegally occupying Palestinian land.

Zivotofsky v. Kerry

While the aforementioned legal pronouncement concerns the highest level of our executive branch of government, let me take you to a second official pronouncement. This one implicates the highest level of the judicial branch of government. The United States Supreme Court made a decision in June of 2015 in the case Zivotofsky v. Kerry2 involving national ownership of the City of Jerusalem. Section 241(d) of the Foreign Relations Authorization Act, Fiscal Year 2003, which was signed into law by President G. W. Bush, mandates that “For purposes of the registration of birth, certification of nationality, or issuance of a passport of a United States citizen born in the city of Jerusalem, the Secretary shall, upon the request of the citizen or the citizen’s legal guardian, record the place of birth as Israel.” In other words, for those born abroad to American citizens in the ancient City of Jerusalem, the birth was to be considered as having taken place within the nation of Israel due to the widely held belief that Jerusalem is perhaps the most well-known Israeli city. However, this statutory “section was seen by the Executive as conflicting with the long-standing U.S. policy that the status of Jerusalem must be resolved through negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.”3 In other words, because the Obama Administration did not acknowledge Jerusalem as a Jewish city, the law conflicted with the Administration’s foreign affairs perspective.

Thus, when Menachem Binyamin Zivotofsky was born in Jerusalem shortly after the enactment of the Foreign Relations Authorization Act and the request to list Israel as the birthplace on Menachem’s passport was denied by the United States government, his parents, Ari and Naomi Zivotofsky, then filed suit against the American State Department, which was then headed by Hillary Rodham Clinton. This case eventually reached the United States Supreme Court, which tragically held that in foreign affairs “the President has an exclusive power of recognition, and, therefore, Congress may not require the State Department to indicate in passports that Jerusalem is part of Israel.”4 In other words, over the strong dissent of conservative court members, such as the late Antonin Scalia, although federal law required the official recognition of Jerusalem as belonging to the nation of Israel, the Obama Administration was not bound by this law since the task of foreign affairs resided exclusively within the President’s domain. Thus, according to the highest court in the land, Obama was not obligated to acknowledge Jerusalem as an Israeli city if his foreign policy perspective caused him to see Jerusalem as belonging to another nation or people-group, such as the “Palestinians.”

For decades the United States Supreme Court has been drifting in a Godless direction. This trajectory becomes apparent simply by observing the court’s decisions in the areas of abortion on demand, same-sex marriage, the upholding of government run healthcare, and the removal of the Bible and prayer from the public schools specifically and the public square in general. In Zivotofsky v. Kerry, by failing to comply with federal law as well as the biblical and historical reality that Jerusalem belongs to Israel, the high court continued in its current pagan trajectory.

Letter Notification of Obama’s Remarks at the Peres Memorial

Third, the United States official refusal to acknowledge Jerusalem belonged to Israel was once again recently reaffirmed by the Obama Administration. On September 30, 2016 the White House put out a letter notifying people of the remarks made by President Obama at the memorial service of former Israeli President Shimon Peres. Sadly, this letter had the words “Israel, Jerusalem” crossed out.5 “This was a definite slap in Israel’s face, and a reiteration of the White House policy that Jerusalem does not belong to Israel.”6 Despite these recent decisions emanating from the highest level of both of our executive and judicial branches, it remains obvious from Scripture that Jerusalem belongs to the nation of Israel. First Kings 11:32, which is just one of a plethora of verses that could be cited, indicates, “But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel” (italics added).

Again, these three pronouncements are not the statements of a mere handful of misguided policy makers functioning within the United States government. Rather, they have taken on legal force and in so doing now represent the official legal position of the United States toward Israel. Unless we soon elect another President who will reverse these decisions, at the present time the official legal position of the United States is that Israel is occupying Palestinian land and Jerusalem is not a city belonging to national Israel. I find this to be a frightening and stunning development in light of God’s declaration “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse” (Gen 12:3; italics added). In fact, God promises to bring judgment on those nations that deliberately divide His land. Joel 3:2 predicts, “I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then I will enter into judgment with them there On behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; And they have divided up My land” (italics added).

Obama Of all the negative aspects of the Obama legacy, America’s present anti-Israel trend may very well be the most significant and deleterious to our national well being. The anti-Israel policies of America’s 44th President have placed the United States on a collision course with both the creator and judge of the universe. If there was ever a time in American history for our beloved nation to change course, the time is now! My hope and prayer is that this information will be soon learned by the apathetic and biblically illiterate American population so that they will choose wisely who our next President will be in just one month, on November 8th, 2016.

  1. I just had a letter from Jay Sekulow, saying he is afraid that Oboma will try to get the UN to separate Jerusalem, before he leaves office. We need to contact our representatives and let them know that we don’t want that to happen.

I’m so thankful for Christian political junkies that keep folks like me informed. I had no idea Obama was denying that Jerusalem is Israel. God save all Israel!

Thank you for this excellent article. If I may reminisce, I recall that during the six-day war of 1967, my dad said, “If this nation ever turns its back on Israel, our days are numbered.” My dad was a prophet that day. I was just graduating from high school, and those words are still ringing in my ears. That is an exact quote, by the way. That’s how clearly I remember him saying that. BTW, it was to be another nine years before I came to Christ (Sept. 1976), just to add a little more weight to the significance of his saying.

It looks like we’ve turned our backs on Israel. And that’s not just at the top, although I recognize that the leadership acts on behalf of, and speaks for, the whole people. No, it seems as though this mindset has been adopted by the nation as a whole. Witness the incredible amount of anti-Jewish, anti-Israel diatribe on the web. In many circles, it’s a given that Israel is an illegal occupant of their land and an oppressor of the rightful owners.

As in any chicken-egg conundrum, I can’t really tell if our national ungodliness has led us to this mindset, or if this mindset has prompted God to give us over to ungodliness, to our destruction. But the Biblical pattern so evident in Kings and Chronicles where, as went the leadership, so went the people seems to have held true in this case as well.

    God help us.

Really appreciate this article. I was led to it by a post on Facebook by Dave Brewer. I have written a number of articles about the wrong-headedness of U.S. policy that were published as op-eds at Although I am a born again believer, my articles typically do not include Biblical arguments/reasons to support either the premises or conclusions. I found it refreshing to see your Biblical sources in print. 🙂
